Horror movie vs horror book battle vol 1:The Exorcist

This is the new category featured in my zine, and it is in my opinion the interesting one. I always love to ask people from the horror scene, which is better, is it the movie or is it the book upon which the movie was based.

This first episode we will talk about The Exorcist. I believe that every self respecting horror fiend saw the William Friedkin classic movie at least once in their lifetime. There are two sequels and a prequel, also two seasons of the tv series but we will keep our minds on the first one. Many dubbed it the scariest horror movie of all times, which is in my opinion much overrated, because for me The Sentinel and for instance Omen or Burnt Offerings were a lot scarier than The Exorcist. The cast in the movie was awesome, especially young Linda Blair who became horror icon thanks to the role of possessed girl Regan and no matter where she starred afterwards she always remained equalized with this movie. The music and dark atmosphere of the movie were also awesome as was the great ending. So, that makes it one of the all time classics of the genre which will withstand every test of time.

Moving onto the novel. The late William Peter Blatty did not write and publish much in terms of quantity but this novel which I read last week was awesome and it managed to have the same dark and brooding atmosphere as the movie. The only thing that the book has and movie has not is wider scope of some characters who dont appear in the movie at all or are marginalized like Swiss housemaid and her husband, or detective Kinderman, who appears a lot in the novel. But it is normal that they cut that out in the movie to make it more fluent and interesting to the cinema goers focusing mainly on one storyline and avoiding the substorylines. The book has the same ending as the movie, so nothing changed like the movie makers sometimes do. Happily this one was not the case.

In the end, what can I say? The movie and the book are equally great and that just doesnt happen a lot, so after our first horror movie vs horror book we can say:

Horror movie 1:Horror book 1-the match was a draw!

(record review)BY ALL MEANS-“Cultivated Rhetoric”(Felony Records)

By All Means are the band from the Los Angeles area and when we talk about them we can safely say that they are a veteran band in the melodic punkrock scene. Their path began almost 20 years ago, in 1999. After three full length releases and some lineup change the trio delivers this new record.

cover

The new album contains 12 songs of powerful melodic punkrock played with experience, knowledge, heart and soul, not necessary in that order hehe. The songs are not over the top fast aggressive hardcore punk stuff, they tend to gravitate more towards pop punk, but the melodies, backing vocals, guitar hooks and lyrics are first class. In fact, one of the most calm songs on the album, namely “Old Friend” is for me the best on the album, having lyrics that make you emotional and give you goosebumps. All of the songs are worth the listening and doing it again and for good measure, spin the fucker one more time to be certain you heard all of the great music on this record. Some more highlights songs:”Stiletto Stars”, “No Longer Yours”.

SILENT NIGHT by Nikolas Boleslavski

Deda Mraz sedi u fotelji i pije čaj.
– Uvek isto… Svake godine isto…
Deda zaustavi gutljaj i podiže obrvu.
Njegove sanke lete preko svih krovova sveta.
kamin.
Kada mu se oblak gareži razbistri pred očima, ugleda dečaka koji ga oduševljeno posmatra.
– Znao sam da ćeš doći! – kaže dečak – Izvoli, uzmi keksa i mleka…
Jasno?
Dečak ga gleda.
– Šta znači „po automatizmu“? – pita, a Deda Mraz pada u nesvest.

– Kada?
„poklon“…
– A…
– Ššššš… Ne govorite, ne govorite… – stavlja mu ruku na usta – Dovoljno ste uradili…
Deda Mraz je nemo gleda u oči.
– … sad je na mene red… – i jednim mu potezom odseče glavu.
pala Deda Mrazova glava, a za njom i ostatak.
Deda Mraz još jednom pogleda oko sebe i uzdahnu:
– Uvek isto… Svake godine isto…

Sram me malo, no sve ove godine, 25 cirka, nikada nisam gledao ovaj bend uživo. Rijetko sviraju ovdje gore u našim krajevima, pa sam ih uvijek nekako propustio.

IMG_20171224_001931

(record review)THE OTHER-“Casket Case”(Drakkar)

When I was getting into horrorpunk I have only listened to The Misfits before I found out the whole new and beautiful scene existing in the underground. Horrorpunk scene has some of the nicest people I have ever met besides having awesome bands and I can safely say that horrorpunk scene still is not corrupted by mainstream as some other aspects of the underground scene. As my nights grew longer I discovered some of the bands that became my favorite in the scene, like Blitzkid, The Crimson Ghosts, Balzac and of course The Other.

2017 - Casket Case

The Other is a German horrorpunk band hailing from Cologne and if I counted well, this is their seventh full length album. The album contains 16 songs of beautiful and dark melodic horrorpunk with some goth and metal influences. There are also some beautiful guest lady vocals on “Little Black Riding Hood”, nicely fitting in with Rod Ushers main vocal lines. As is the case on last few albums there is also one song in German language, the excellent “Morgen Ohne Grauen”. The song structures are hard, melodic and melodramatic as only horrorpunks and Germans can do hehe. I could describe the songs hear sixteen times, but it is up to you to listen to the whole album and check out the beauy and maybe horrorpunk will gain another creature of the night, being you. This album has it all, punk melody, hardcore agressiveness and goth sensibility packed in beautiful music. Top songs;”A Party At Crystal Lake”, “A Heart Is Mysterious”, “Shes A Ghost”.

(record review)THE FLY DOWNS-“Pockets Out ep”

The Fly Downs are a band hailing from Ottawa, Canada. This trio just released their debut ep and I listened to it and liked it so here is the review.

cover

The ep contains six songs of melodic punk with some hardcore and pop punk influences. Musically, this band is nothing new and revolutionary but they play with heart and balls and make great songs and that is just all that is important. The songs are structured with lots of melodic guitar hooks and fine melodies combined with great harmonized backing vocals. The main vocals remind me in some songs of Joey Cape of Lagwagon, especially in “SFANN”, which is one of my favorite tracks on this record. The lyrics are on more personal level about love, friendship, broken hearts and similar themes and they are good. In all, this is an excellent ep and it is on Bandcamp for free or for donation, so go ahead if you like such music, support the guys and drop them a line to tell them what do you think about their record.

(record review)DANNY TREJO: “Another Trejo’s Night”(Indelirium Records)

Italian hardcore scene never ceases to amaze me with excellent bands coming out every day. This time I listened to the new album by Danny Trejo from Venice area who released new album recently via Indelirum Records.

cover

Danny Trejo beginnings go to 2011.when the six members of some known underground bands joined together to play in this band. Since then they released an ep and this is their second full length album. The album contains 12 tracks of total fast obliterating hardcore with some thrash metal hooks and skatepunk melodies thrown in. The guys have three guitars and it is awesome. I can tell you that this album makes one helluva energetic bomb when you listen to it as a whole. All the songs are so fast and great that the album listening passes very soon and makes you want to listen to it all over again to catch some more beautiful moments that you missed.

The lyrics are in English and the singer shouts and screams but it does not sound lame or boring. There are some gang back vocals ideal for shouting together in the mic at the gig. I have read that these guys played a lot live so I would really love to see and hear them live, I am sure they are awesome. Top tracks:”Nuclear Holocaust”, “Depressed Generation”.
