(record review) AMALIA BLOOM-Maiden Voyage

Italy never ceases to amaze with the underground hardcore punk scene over there. This time I listened and reviewed for our zine the new Amalia Bloom record.

a3903151208_10

These guys are hailing from Vicenza, Italy and are playing melodic hardcore punk with post hardcore and some screamo influences. The new record was a process of two years in writing and recording, but finally here it is and it contains 8 songs. Chiaroscuro is a fine miniature that serves as a kind of intro to the record. The whole album can be categorized as a concept album with the story evolving around one boy and his journey through his consciousness and imagination, thus trying to discover the secrets of life, death, existence and avoid personal demons. The music is sometimes melodic Cali punk style, but soon evolves into noise parts, then succumbing into brutal screaming parts, yet to return again as deeply emotional singing and melodies, that makes it original and great journey for the ears and mind of the listener. I listened to this album on a quiet Saturday sunny morning, being home alone and I just closed my eyes and let the music take me to the other places, becoming in a way that boy from the lyrical side that this record tries to tell with the music and texts. This is a great one, just showing how hardcore can be both diverse and original and that is the beauty of it all.

(record review)Apostles of Eris/Raining-Split(Zegema Beach Records)

Zegema Beach Records always delivers fine music in terms of darkened hardcore and screamo with fine diy bands coming our way. This time I listened and reviewed the Apostles of Eris/Raining split record.

cover

Apostles of Eris are from Usa/Canada and started as a one man project of Jesse Mowery (Majorel, In Wolves Clothing, Altar Of Complaints, etc.). But, now Dave Norman on vocals (Swallows Nest, The World That Summer, мятеж, etc.)  was added to the story, to make it more rich in terms of diy hardcore screamo with a very darkened atmosphere. 5 songs complete each other with screaming vocals, sometimes chaotic song structures and noisy parts, but also sad and beautiful melodies to make one great listening pleasure hehe. What I love about this band is that they use samples on their record and that only adds to the already dark atmosphere. Definitely a band to watch out for and I love this side of the record.

Raining are hailing from New Zealand. This trio plays their vision of emotional apocalyptic hardcore leaning a bit more on emo side of things. Their five songs remind me a bit more of some bands from the 90-ies and early 2000-s, for example of Croatian band Analena, only Raining are a bit more darker and less melodic than said band. What I love about this band are couple of vocals that interplay each other nicely. Also, the atmosphere is great, but I would love a bit more melody and little less chaos in some song structures, but hey that is only me and my personal taste.

This is an awesome record, Apostles of Eris side is a bit more to my taste, but Raining are great too. Go get this one!

(record review)CHOKEHOLD-With this thread I hold on (Good Fight Music)

Welcome back Chokehold! The 90-ies hardcore heroes are back with their first record in 25 years out with Good Fight Music and I listened and reviewed the record in our zine.

folder

When I was a kid growing up in the 90-ies there was this thing in hardcore which we called new school hardcore back then. It was hardcore which was not old school youth crew played fast, but more slower, technical and metalic oriented stuff, bands like Earth Crisis, Strife, Snapcase and all those Victory styled bands back then coming to mind. Well, Chokehold play just that, metalic oriented 90-ies styled hardcore with tough technically well played riffs, rolling drums, thunderous screaming vocals and songs just made for moshing. There are 8 songs on this record with Profit Over People, Silenced and Underneath being my personal favorites. I was not a fan of this kind of hardcore back then when I was a kid, I love it now! Growing up? Maybe, I don´t believe it, maybe just my hardcore taste widened hehe.

Odličan sound, nastup i set pjesama.

(record review) Malvina-Hybrid War

We already featured awesome Brasilian progressive hardcore punk band Malvina on the pages of this zine, when we reviewed their e.p. Now, the guys released their new full length album and I listened and reviewed it for our zine.

cover

The album contains 10 songs of technical, progressive hardcore with old school skatepunk influences. I am always amazed by South American bands how they somehow mix their anger, anguish, depression with sadness and melancholy. This is how the music of Malvina sounds to me. The title song is fast, aggressive yet melancholic melody somehow drags itself throughout the whole song. XIII is one of my personal favorites with great melody and superb song structure, I can only imagine how this one sounds powerful live. The lyrics of the band are pretty political and deal with the theme of life in Brasil and political coupe there and poverty and life in general, but I think many of us can relate to the lyrics of Malvina. Scenario is a bit longer song, sounding a bit nervous to me, noisy, then transforming into pure old school punk song which makes you pump your fist in the air. Herakleion only reminds and amazes me how technical and complex the music of this band can be. The vocals are very important to me in such bands and the singer here sounds harsh yet still enough melodic and it is weird, but true, the guy somehow reminded me of harsher version of Jim from Pennywise. The album does not get boring because there are no fillers with complex longer songs interplaying with hardcore punk angry miniatures like The Anomie. Not to discover all of it, you will have to get and listen to this record yourself. If you like your hardcore a bit original, a bit angry, yet melodic and bringing to you a breeze of South America, you will not be disappointed. Amazing band!

(record review) Downway-Last Chance For More Regrets(Thousand Islands Records)

Downway released their new record, first album in 15 years with Thousand Islands Records. I listened and reviewed it for our zine.

folder

This band is from Calgary, Alberta and they were formed in 1994. After five releases, four music videos, they disbanded in 2003. They were reformed for new victories in 2017. and this is the first new music album in 15 years.

The album contains intro plus eleven songs of pure 90-ies melodic punk hardcore which somehow became rare in these modern times, when everyone is playing this more modern technical metalic skatepunk. Well, time stopped and brought us back in the past for this jewel of an album with no holds barred, pure hearted melodic punk hardcore with a lot of awesome melodies, great personal lyrics that everyone can relate to, and above all, superb songwriting. I was totally surprised how excellent this album is, I expected something good, but not this good. If you are a fan of fast, at times mid tempo melodic punk, with nice vocals that express a lot of emotion to the lyrics they sing about, choruses you´ll sing along to, this album is the right one for you. My favorite songs: Black Taxes, Same Sky, Saying Your Name, Punk OG.
